About this service

Lost Car Keys, explained

Losing every key is the hardest automotive job, because there is no key to copy. On most vehicles we can still cut a key to the lock and program a new chip on site, without towing the car to a dealer.

Because a new key starts the car, we are strict about ownership. Expect us to check your ID against the registration or title before we start.

What's included

What we handle

Key made from the lock or code

We decode the lock or use the key code to cut a working blade.

New chip or smart key programmed

The new key is added to the immobilizer so the engine starts.

Old keys removed

Where the car allows it, the lost keys are erased so they cannot start the car.

A spare while we are there

Making two keys in one visit costs much less than coming back later.

No chip. Common on older cars, many trucks from the 1990s and earlier, and as the door key on newer cars.

A chip in the head talks to the car's immobilizer. The blade can be cut anywhere, but the car will not start until the chip is programmed.

Remote head key

Key blade and lock/unlock buttons in one piece. Both the chip and the remote have to be programmed.

The blade folds into the remote. Popular on Ford, GM and Hyundai/Kia models.

Smart key / proximity fob

Push-button start. The car detects the fob in your pocket. Most have a hidden emergency blade for the door.

Fobik key

The Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram fob that plugs into the dash instead of a keyhole.

FAQ

Lost Car Keys questions

Do I need to tow my car to the dealer?

On most supported vehicles, no. We do the work where the car is parked.

What if my registration is in the car?

We open the car first, then verify the registration against your ID before making the key.

Can someone use my lost key?

If the car supports it, we erase lost keys from its memory so they no longer start the engine. For a door lock concern, we can also rekey the door cylinders.
